About Me

Finding a therapist that fits your needs

I'm Alyssia (ah-lee-sha) Turner

LGPC, License #LGP16633,
under the supervision of Kristen Custer

I am native Marylander, and graduated from Hood College with a bachelor's degree in communication. I spent my previous career working in marketing and management, with the majority of my time at a local non-profit. Helping people through the hardest parts of their lives and come out stronger is a privilege, and I wanted to continue that work. When I decided I needed a change, I knew therapy was where I wanted to be. I went back to school and graduated from the University of West Alabama with a master's in clinical mental health counseling.

My approach

I believe that everything we do, good or bad, helped us at some point in our lives. You may have survived a tough childhood, an abusive relationship, or a toxic work environment. My goal as a therapist is to help you name your strengths, identify the coping skills that no longer serve you, and make a conscious decision on shaping your future. Therapy gives you the chance to find understanding and healing in a professional setting that ensures you are treated with respect and dignity.

If you like the technical side, my treatment is informed by client-centered therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), choice theory, and transactional analysis. I am also EMDR-trained.

If you'd like to begin changing your life, reach out to me for a free 15-minute introductory consultation to see if we'd be a good fit.

Services

Offering virtual therapy services based in Maryland

Patterns from earlier in life often hold us back without us even realizing it. You may have tried, many times, to address the problem on your own before considering therapy. This stuck sensation can leave you feeling frustrated and make it difficult to see how to move forward.

In therapy, we'll work together to identify the parts of you that hold you back, and how to cultivate the parts that can lead to a new perspective.

What makes therapy different?

It's a question you may be wondering — what can I get from therapy that I can't get just talking with a friend? Friendships are extremely important, and can be one of the tools we use in our mental health journey.

What's different in therapy is the direction of conversation. Your session is for you. Your therapist is solely focused on you and your needs for the duration of the session, and is bound to hold your confidentiality between sessions. This gives you the freedom to explore behaviors and patterns that you may not feel comfortable bringing up with your family and friends.

Who am I a good fit for?

If you are curious to learn more about yourself, and open to trying new ways of thinking or communicating, you and I may be a good fit. I work with topics such as trauma, stress, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and life transitions.

What's EMDR?

EMDR is one of the services I offer. EMDR is a treatment where the client and therapist jump-start the brain's natural memory processing, then target a trauma memory, helping the memory to be less vivid and less disruptive. One benefit to EMDR is that it does not require you to describe the trauma in detail like other types of therapy. EMDR has been endorsed by numerous organizations, including the Department of Veterans Affairs, the American Psychological Association, the World Health Organization, and the US Department of Defense. Offering consultations and ongoing therapy sessions

Introduction

Feeling comfortable with your therapist is an important part of treatment. I offer a free 15-minute video consultation for new clients, where we can discuss your goals, my approach, and your questions about therapy.

Ongoing Therapy

A standard therapy session is 55 minutes in length, and is billed at a rate of $125 per session. Limited sliding-scale spots are available based on need. Goals, progress, frequency of sessions, and length of services is discussed at the beginning of treatment and revisited at regular intervals. Therapy is held via video chat through a secure portal. Clients need a webcam, speakers/earphones, a stable internet connection, and a private space in the state of Maryland.

A Word about Insurance and Medical Spending

At this time, I am not accepting any insurance plans. Your coverage may include partial reimbursement for out-of-network services. Please call the number on the back of your insurance card to see if your plan includes reimbursement for behavioral out-of-network care.

Therapy and behavioral health services are often qualifying expenses for Healthcare Flex Spending programs or Health Savings Account programs. If you participate in either of these services, reach out to your program administrator or your employer's Human Resources department to see if behavioral health services are reimbursable.

Why don't I take insurance? Some insurance plans have limits on the number of sessions they cover, or require the therapist to disclose certain information such as treatment goals and progress. I believe treatment decisions should be between the client and their therapist, that session limits can put undue pressure on the process, and that your confidentiality is a critical component of therapy.

they are transformed.”
